Scan Budget

A Scan Budget is the monthly allowance of prompt checks included in an AI visibility monitoring plan, where one scan checks one tracked prompt across the monitored AI models. Instead of a fixed cap on how many prompts can be tracked, the budget is spent according to the scan frequency assigned to each prompt.

Definition

The concept parallels crawl budget in traditional SEO: a finite resource allocated across a larger set of targets according to priority. A plan with 1 800 monthly scans covers 60 prompts checked daily, or several hundred prompts checked weekly, or any mix in between. High-priority prompts, typically branded and buying-intent queries, keep daily scans for fresh data, while long-tail informational prompts run on slower cycles at a fraction of the cost in scans.

Scan budgets change how tracking depth is planned. Rather than asking which prompts fit under a cap, teams ask how fresh each prompt's data needs to be. A prompt scanned every 14 days consumes roughly one fourteenth of the budget of a daily prompt, so slowing the long tail multiplies total coverage without changing the plan. ChatBakers introduced this model with scan frequencies configurable per website, topic, and individual prompt.

Why it matters for AI visibility

AI visibility is a portfolio problem: a brand's presence is shaped by hundreds of question variations, not the handful that fit under a fixed prompt cap. A scan budget lets teams monitor the full question landscape at appropriate freshness levels, which produces a more complete visibility picture and catches long-tail shifts that capped tracking never sees.
