AI share of voice: the one metric that matters
Definition, benchmarks and per-platform tracking: how to compute AI share of voice, what good looks like, and why it beats rank and raw counts.
AI share of voice (SOV) is the percentage of AI answers, across a fixed set of buyer prompts, that mention your brand. Thirty mentions in one hundred answers is 30% SOV. It is the headline GEO metric because it is comparable across time, competitors and platforms — everything rank-based breaks the moment answers stop being lists.
How to compute it (vendor-neutral)
- Fix the prompt set. 20–50 buyer questions: definitions, comparisons, "best tool for X". Freeze the list; changing prompts mid-stream breaks trend comparability.
- Query each platform separately. Same set in ChatGPT and Perplexity at minimum; add Gemini and AI Overviews as you scale. Record mention yes/no per answer.
- Divide and segment. Mentions ÷ answers = SOV. Then cut it: per platform, per funnel stage (informational vs commercial prompts), vs each named competitor.
- Re-query monthly, report the delta. AI answers are probabilistic — one round is noise, four rounds is a trend.
What good looks like
There is no universal benchmark — SOV depends on category concentration. Use three anchors instead: your own trend (up is the goal), your top competitor's SOV on the identical set (the gap is the brief), and the zero baseline (unmentioned everywhere means undiscovered, usually a crawler or definition problem, not a content-quality problem).
What share of voice doesn't tell you
SOV counts mentions, not their quality: a caveat mention ("good for X, but…") scores the same as an endorsement. Pair it with quarterly accuracy checks (is the description right?) and sentiment reads. And remember the economics underneath: cited brands take ~35% more organic clicks — SOV is worth tracking because the citation itself converts.

Frequently asked questions
Share of voice or citation count — which first?
Share of voice. Citation counts grow with prompt-set size and flatter every comparison; share of voice normalizes to a percentage, so it survives set changes and reads in one sentence to anyone: 'we are mentioned in 34% of buyer answers, up from 21%.'
Should I blend platforms into one score?
Report both: one blended headline for trends, per-platform splits for action. Blends hide the most common real situation — leading in Perplexity, absent in ChatGPT — and each platform needs different fixes.
