Measuring AI visibility
Share of voice, citation rate and sentiment: the three metrics that tell you whether AI assistants recommend your brand — with benchmarks and a free manual method.
Measuring AI visibility means tracking how often, where, and how favorably AI assistants mention your brand across a fixed set of buyer prompts. The headline metric is share of voice — the percentage of answers that cite you — supported by citation rate (how much of the answer is sourced) and sentiment (how favorably). Everything else explains why those numbers move.
Why measurement is the business case
- The click is collapsing: pages showing AI Overviews correlate with 58% lower CTR on position one (Ahrefs, December 2025); Seer measured −61 to −65% organic CTR on AIO queries across 25M impressions.
- The cited keep the upside: brands cited in AI Overviews take ~35% more organic clicks (and +91% paid) than uncited ones.
- Buyers moved first: 51% of B2B software buyers start research in AI chatbots more often than Google (G2, 2026). The honest counterweight: AI search visitors are few but convert ~4.4x better than organic (Semrush) — small channel, strong signal.
The three metrics, defined
- Share of voice. Mentions divided by total answers in your prompt set, per platform. The one number for the exec summary.
- Citation quality. Are you named first or as an afterthought? Is the description accurate? A mention with wrong pricing costs more than silence — check accuracy quarterly.
- Sentiment and context. Positive, neutral, or framed as a caveat. Sentiment decides whether visibility converts.
A vendor-neutral workflow: mention gaps
Every tracking tool sells proprietary scores. The portable workflow underneath is the mention gap: run your prompt set, mark every answer where a competitor is cited and you are not, open the cited source, and write down the missing piece. Citation gaps (they're sourced, you're not) and source gaps (they appear in roundups you don't) map 1:1 to content briefs. The tool changes; the workflow doesn't.

Frequently asked questions
What is AI share of voice?
The percentage of AI answers in your tracked prompt set that mention your brand. If 30 out of 100 test prompts mention you, your share of voice is 30%. It is the headline GEO metric: one number that moves when your optimization works.
How many prompts do I need to track?
Start with 20–50 prompts that mirror real buyer questions: category definitions, comparisons, and 'best tool for X' queries. Vendors running GEO programs target 20–30 prompts per core topic, refreshed monthly. Fewer, well-chosen prompts beat hundreds of generic ones.
How often should I measure?
Weekly for active optimization, monthly for reporting. AI answers are probabilistic — the same prompt can yield different mentions — so look at trends over 4+ weeks, never single data points. Re-query the identical set; changing prompts mid-stream breaks comparability.
Can I measure without a paid tool?
Yes, for a baseline: 20 prompts, asked weekly in ChatGPT and Perplexity, logged in a spreadsheet — about 30 minutes a week. You also get AI referral traffic free in GA (utm_source=chatgpt.com is measurable today). Paid tooling pays off when the set grows past manual effort or you need competitor tracking and alerts.
