SEO and GEO share foundations but not finish lines. Both reward authority, freshness and technical health. But SEO's unit of success is a click from a ranked list, while GEO's is a citation inside one synthesized answer — and measurements show the two barely overlap: ChatGPT citations match Google results only about 12% of the time.

What carries over verbatim

A crawlable site, topical depth, backlinks from trusted domains, up-to-date content, valid schema. If your SEO is solid, you are roughly halfway to GEO — Gemini and AI Overviews in particular reward exactly what Google rewards, and AI-cited content runs about 25.7% fresher than average organic results. Do not rebuild; extend.

What changes

  • From keywords to prompts. Buyers ask full questions, not two-word queries. Optimize pages to answer one question completely.
  • From clicks to extractions. Put the plain answer first — AI lifts from the first viewport. Burying the lede under intros costs citations.
  • From links to mentions. A brand mention in an independent roundup can outweigh a backlink for AI purposes. Mention-building joins link-building.
  • From positions to share of voice. There is no position #3 in a chat answer. Measure the percentage of answers that name you, per prompt set, per platform.

Where the 12% number comes from — and its limit

The ~12% ChatGPT–SERP citation overlap comes from large-scale citation analyses (via Ahrefs/Profound data summaries). It is observational, not causal: it proves the two channels select differently, not that SEO is useless for AI. Treat it as the reason to measure both, not to abandon either.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop doing SEO and only do GEO?

No. Google holds over 90% search share and classic search still drives most discovery traffic. Much of what ranks well also feeds AI answers — Gemini and AI Overviews build directly on Google's index. Run GEO as an extension of SEO: same foundations, different finish.

What is the single biggest practical difference?

The unit of success. SEO optimizes for position in a ranked list; GEO optimizes for mention inside one generated answer. That changes what you measure (share of voice instead of rank) and what you ship last (extractable answers and third-party mentions instead of keyword density).
